A brief history
In 1890, on the occasion of the World Fair in Bucharest, HM King Carol I of Romania asked his friend, architect Suter from Germany, to build a park and the facilities necessary to accommodate the first and only ever World Fair in Romania. Suter fell in love with the wine hill next to the swamps that later became one of the largest and nicest parks of Bucharest, with the breathtaking views over the entire city from the top of the Filaret hill. He purchased the top of the hill, built himself a small palace on the edge of the hill and a tree lined alley from the park to his house. Later he added eight more houses on the alley and sold them to the rich and famous of his times.
Bought by an old banker, Suter Palace was donated to his mistress around 1940. The wife of a Romanian Minister, she did not have the chance to enjoy the comfort and beauty of her small palace for long. The communists took over power in Romania, and she too had to flee the country with her two year old child.
From 1946, the Suter building served as one of the first legal headquarters of the feared communist party, and center of the secret soviet police NKDV (KGB) as well as other institutions. In 2002, the building was finally returned to the heirs of its former rightful private owners.
Suter Street
Suter Street, is a tree-lined enclave near the Filaret station, in a prestigious and growing neighborhood. The street was named after the German architect who built the Carol Park ("Parcul Carol I") for his friend, HM King Carol I of Romania. It takes only minutes to walk downtown and to the financial district.
