Tourist attractions in the surroundings

Pestera Muierilor (Women's Cave): it is named this way because around year 1800 many of the Romanian people of this area, especially women, children and the aged ran from the face of the Turkish army and hid in the cave. At one part of the cave there is a hole in the roof which served as a chimney for the exit of smoke from cooking fires.
In the cave there were found 183 cave bear skeletons and also the head of an ancient woman. The cave was made by the Yellow River, the Rilul Galbenu, and is at 5km from the pension
Pahomie's Cave or Cave Polovragi, an ancient underground meander of river Oltet, situated at the entrance of the Oltet Canyon, has a length of 9000m, including numerous and varied deep galleries that form a real labyrinth. The cave is connected with the ancient story of Zalmoxis, (or Zalmoxes or Zamolxes) the God of the Dacia inhabitants, about the beginning of the second millennium.
There are a lot of stones named after him, such as Zalmoxes' chair, table, tears and so on.
On the top of the mountain in which the cave is situated is a castle (from Dacia time) and the story was that Zalmoxes lived there and descended to the cave through a tunnel between the castle and the cave.
The Oltetului Canyon is one of the most spectacular tourist attractions in the area. Since the entry the landscape’s beauty overwhelms you. Steep walls of rock,3-4 m apart at the bottom and 10-15m at the top, are riddled by dozens of inaccessible caves. On the left side flows the crystal, and yet noisy, Oltet river, where, in the morning hours, you have the chance of an unprecedented spectacle: trout swimming upstream, jumping over small waterfalls formed by the river stones.
Polovragi Monastery (in Gorj district) is one of the most important religious and artistic monuments which attracts the admiration and the appreciation of the visitors from our country and from abroad. It’s located near the Oltet Canyon, and was founded around 1505 by Radul and Patru, Danciul Zamona's sons, which are mentioned in a document issued by Prince Basarab cel Tanar (1477-1481), on 18th January 1480. This document constitues the first documentary attestation of the village of Polovragi.
Ranca ski mountain resort, located 20 km from the pension, is situated at an altitude of 1600m and offers a breathtaking view. Enthusiasts will enjoy hiking the trails of Parangului massif that will lead them to peaks such as Parangul Mare (2519m), Carja, Mandra, Stoienita, Setea Mare, Mohoru, or glacial lakes with waters clear as the tears: Rosiile, Calcescu , Mija, lacul Verde.
Ski enthusiasts will find plenty of snow until late in spring and two carefully maintained slopes, for beginners to advanced, both equipped with lifts.
Horezu Town, situated 20km from the pension, is known as an ancient center of folk pottery. If you want to see craftsmen at work and want to buy authentic items of pottery, Horezu is certainly an excellent choice.
